Cherwell College Students Explore Oxford’s Pitt Rivers Museum
As part of their induction week, Cherwell College Oxford A-Level students enjoyed an inspiring visit to one of the city’s most extraordinary cultural treasures – the Pitt Rivers Museum. For many of our new joiners, this was their very first time stepping into the famous galleries, and the experience proved both memorable and thought-provoking.
The museum, renowned worldwide for its unique displays of anthropology, archaeology, and ethnography, provided a fascinating backdrop for our students to explore the connections between past and present. Moving through the collections, students encountered a wealth of artefacts that sparked curiosity and debate.
One student reflected on the impact of the exhibits:
“The museums had a great showcase of some historical events. The historical medical tools for amputation, anaesthesia, post-mortem analysis; astronomical devices like telescopes; typhoid and history of sewage in British cities; as well as key historical documents such as the Declaration of Independence and Buddhist mantras are very detailed and uncommon insight into how today’s world is formed.”
The group particularly appreciated the way in which the Pitt Rivers brings together objects from across the globe, demonstrating the richness of human history and culture. From intricate ritual items to groundbreaking scientific instruments, the displays invite visitors to consider how ideas, practices, and innovations have shaped societies through time.
This visit was not only an opportunity to learn outside the classroom but also a chance for students to bond with their peers at the start of the academic year. Exploring Oxford’s museums and cultural landmarks forms an important part of induction at Cherwell College, helping students feel connected both to the city and to the long tradition of inquiry and discovery that it represents.
We are delighted to see our students engaging so thoughtfully with the collections, and we look forward to many more enriching visits to Oxford’s museums and historic sites throughout the year.
