ADVENTURES IN HYDROPONICS

YICHUAN CAO

A group of enthusiastic and young scientists gathered together and investigated the fascinating field of hydroponics. The project was broken down in to subunits and researched step by step, the steady progress ensuring each of the basic components of an effective research methodology were not left out. A reliably appropriate place to start with any research project is always a definition. In this instance, by definition, “Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without the use of soil, by using water through which nutrients are pumped".

Expanding on this definition are the use of renewable energy sources to power the pumps which let the nutrients circulate and lamps for plant growth, or hydrogen fuel cells which not only provide electricity, but also water to rehydrate powdered nutrient for the solution, moreover it is a clean source of energy, releasing no greenhouse gases. The group became particularly interested in HANA – Hydroponic Automatic Nutrient Agriculture. Upon construction of HANA, it was demonstrated that hydroponics may well become the future of agriculture, with its potential to expand to industrial scale, ease of management and relatively low setup cost.
