Stephen Clarke

Stephen Clarke

Principal

The Principal of Cherwell College, Stephen is a former British Diplomat and First Secretary for the UK Government responsible for education and social development in Southern Africa, Eastern Europe, South Caucasus and Central Asia. He also acted as a policy analyst on Education Skills and Conflict Resolution for intergovernmental relations. Stephen also has extensive experience on advising businesses and NGOs on democracy, education and human rights issues.

Stephen holds a BA (Hons) in Politics and Sociology from the University of Southampton, and is a member of Mensa, Institute of Directors, Royal Overseas League, the Oxford Union, the University Club, and a former member of World Bank Supervisory Board and Regional Development Agencies.

Helen Clarke

Helen Clarke

Director of Admissions

Helen is a qualified teacher and a former Head of Finance for HM Government ‘Know How Fund’ established in Central and Eastern Europe. She is also a former project manager at the UK Government Department for International Development (DFID).

Helen holds a BA Economics and Finance for Business Administration from Kyiv National Economic University and an MA in Pedagogical Studies. Helen is fluent in Russian, Ukranian and German.

Paul Craig

Academic Director & SENCo

Paul studied History and Sociology at Oxford before becoming a secondary school humanities and law teacher in Warwickshire specialising in A Level and GCSEs. In 2007 Paul moved to New Zealand where he taught History and Sociology in Auckland and was apppointed Dean of International students in the largest school in the Southern Hemisphere!

He returned to the UK in 2016 and joined Cherwell College in 2017. 

Paul is the go-to person for all things academic and is also an experienced pastoral tutor. 

Alan Carter

Senior Academic Adviser

Alan is an experienced Higher Education adviser and A-level tutor in Oxford with a passion for the tutorial approach and supporting students on an individual basis. He has previously been an undergraduate tutor at Stanford University.

Alan holds a degree in History & Politics.

Mubeen Ashraf

Mubeen Ashraf

Director of Studies

Mubeen completed a BSc with First Class Honours, followed by a MRC funded Masters in Molecular Medicine, studying at Oxford University for her postgraduate degree. She has three years of experience within the pharmaceutical, research, and development industries, taking the posts of research and development scientist and QC scientist. With a passion for science discovery and facilitating education and learning, Mubeen completed her PGCSE at the Oxford University Department of Education, and has over ten years of teaching experience which has included teaching at state comprehensive schools facilitating learning as Head of Chemistry, teaching at tutorial colleges within Oxford, working in the UAE as a science lead teacher, and acting as a science lecturer at colleges for adult education.

Katya Kryvonos

Finance Officer & DofE Centre Manager

Prior to studying Humanities at British Columbia, Canada, Katya studied Art at Hurtwood House. She has an LLB from Oxford Brookes and an LPC from City University, London. Katya is Cherwell's dedicated visa adviser, DofE Centre Manager and Finance Officer.

Claire Leech

Claire Leech

Assistant SENCo

Claire is a qualified teacher with specialisms in Maths, English and SEN support. She studied Material Science, Economics and Management at Oxford University. After five years working in Business, she discovered her passion for teaching. Claire has taught Maths, English as a Foreign Language and English Literature for more than 10 years, in addition to ICT and study skills. Throughout her teaching career she has worked with students with additional needs and began to specialise in SEN support five years ago.

Head of Boarding

Anca is Cherwell College's Head of Boarding, and is responsible for students' welfare and housing environment at our student accommodation block, Cherwell House. She has worked in a variety of residential school environments throughout the UK, and hopes to instil values of kindness, the respect of one self and others and the teaching of sound morals in our students.

Tony Sherwood

Tony Sherwood

Activities Manager

Tony has worked with young people and boarders from various backgrounds over the last 31 years; he has for 18 years managed and owned children homes for children with varying emotional and behavioural difficulties, and for the last 3 years was the Housemaster of a rural Independent Boarding School.

Tony is responsible for promoting and giving structure to the daily lives of students residing at Cherwell House and ensuring they are stimulated through a variety of enrichment activities and programmes.

Denise Page

English Literature

With over 30 years of teaching experience, a Certificate of Education, degree in English from Oxford Brookes, and an MA in Humanities from the Open University. Denise is brilliant and well-liked tutor. Her calm and friendly nature means the she is well suited to building confidence in students during small group and one-to-one tutorials. 

Outside the classroom she enjoys writing - and occasionally publishing.

Graham Coles

Graham Coles

Art

Graham is a brilliant artist and a great teacher. He is known for his caring and compassionate nature, supporting students through the challenging subject of Art and Design. He completed his MA from the Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford. He has been teaching Art & Design for over thirty years now, having taught in different parts of the UK and for a few years in New Zealand.

Janet Simpson

Janet Simpson

English / IELTS / Psychology

Janet holds multiple degrees, including BSc and MSc in Psychology, BA and MA in English and has worked in further education teaching for over 7 years. She is also an undergraduate tutor for the Open University. 

At Cherwell College she teaches English Literature and Language, Psychology and also tutors students for IELTS of which she has in-depth understanding and has been a great support to many of our students.

Photography

John's background encompasses a 20 year career as a professional commercial photographer working with advertising and design agencies and high profile brands worldwide. Having complete a PgDip(Ed) in 2016, John’s focus now is as a practicing artist and specialist teacher of photography at Foundation and A level. John is currently completing a Masters in Fine Art at Oxford Brookes University. 

Katherine Ely

Biology, Chemistry

Katherine holds a BSc in Biochemistry from Kings College London. She is also a trained Chiropractor and has previously worked within the NHS. Katherine is a GCSE examiner and therefore brings to the College a wealth of experience and knowledge.

Laurence Hutton-Smith

Mathematics

Laurence teaches Maths AS & A Level and holds a Mathematics degree from Pembroke College, Oxford. He is also working towards his PhD from Oxford University.

Philosophy

Magnus has been a tutor for sixth form students, undergraduates and adult learners. Having completed his DPhil at Sussex University in Religion and Ethics, Magnus is an experienced tutor in Oxford.

Mark holds an MSc in Applied Statistics from Wolfson College, Oxford and tutors Mathematics and Further Maths here at Cherwell.

Nigel Hezel

Philosophy and Religious Studies

Nigel is a highly experienced tutor at Cherwell College. He holds degrees in both Religious Studies and Philosophy and has many years experience of teaching Philosophy and RS to Sixth Forms across the UK. Nigel is confident with all the major exam boards for both subjects including the older A Level specifications.

Phil has a great deal of knowledge when it comes to the Economics A Level. He holds a Bachelor of Education in Economics and Education and has taught in secondary schools for over a decade. For many years he published texts for Economics students under the Guardian Guides to the Economy series. 

Dr. Meihua Zhang

Dr. Meihua Zhang

Maths tutor

Dr. Meihua Zhang was educated in China and South Korea, but relocated to the UK in 2003. She holds a Masters/PhD in Medical Science. Prior to coming to the UK, she was a qualified teacher in Mathematics and Biological Sciences in China for nearly 12 years.

From 2003 to 2014, she held the post of Senior Researcher at Oxford University, with many papers published in prestigious journals; Dr. Zhang thus has a deep knowledge of mathematics and science coupled with a broad technical expertise and working experience. Dr. Meihua Zhang has always enjoyed teaching, communicating and sharing her knowledge with students.

Sana is an experienced maths teacher who has been working with children and young adults for nearly a decade. She qualified to teach maths at King’s College London. Besides having good subject knowledge, Sana has excellent relationship building skills and is therefore well liked amongst students.

Anita is Cherwell's Latin tutor. She holds a DPhil in Ancient Philosophy from Wolfson College Oxford. 

Adrian Ager

Adrian Ager

English Teacher

Adrian is also an associate history lecturer at Oxford Brookes University. He has a PhD and first class honour's degree in History and English. His most recent publication can be found in the following edited edition:

Adrian also has a successful track-record in tutoring KS3, GCSE, IGCSE, A level and IB students in History and English.

He is CELTA qualified and has considerable experience teaching English to L2 learners. Adrian has taught students from a broad range of backgrounds with disparate learning requirements, including IELTs, pre-university sessions and exam preparation, as well as individuals with SEN.

Away from the classroom, Adrian's interests include music, reading and the arts in general. He enjoys playing the guitar, theatre visits and gallery exhibitions.

John Clare

John Clare

History

John read History at Cambridge and since then has been engaged in teaching, first for a year at a college in the USA, then for many years in independent secondary schools, ending up as Head of History and Politics at Abingdon School, and latterly at tutorial colleges in Oxford. He enjoys keeping up his reading of history, and also travelling to places of historical and cultural interest both in the UK and abroad, most recently in Ethiopia.

Enjoys engaging students in a relaxed learning environment employing a versatile instructional skill set to cater for varied academic needs and learning styles. She successfully employs this diverse educational background to raise the awareness of mental health issues amongst young people and those charged with their care and wellbeing.
