Stephen Clarke

Stephen Clarke

Principal

The Principal of Cherwell College, Stephen is a former British Diplomat and First Secretary for the UK Government responsible for education and social development in Southern Africa, Eastern Europe, South Caucasus and Central Asia. He also acted as a policy analyst on Education Skills and Conflict Resolution for intergovernmental relations. Stephen also has extensive experience on advising businesses and NGOs on democracy, education and human rights issues.

Stephen holds a BA (Hons) in Politics and Sociology from the University of Southampton as well as being a member of Mensa, Institute of Directors, Royal Overseas League, the Oxford Union, the University Club and a former member of World Bank Supervisory Board and Regional Development Agencies.

Helen Clarke

Helen Clarke

Director of Admissions

Helen is a qualified teacher and a former Head of Finance for HM Government ‘Know How Fund’ established in Central and Eastern Europe. She is also a former project manager at the UK Government Department for International Development (DFID).

Helen holds a BA Economics and Finance for Business Administration from Kyiv National Economic University and an MA in Pedagogical Studies. Helen is fluent in Russian, Ukranian and German.

Paul Craig

Academic Director

Paul studied History and Sociology at Oxford before becoming a secondary school humanities and law teacher in Warwickshire specialising in A Level and GCSEs. In 2007 Paul moved to New Zeland where he taught History and Sociology in Auckland and was apppointed Dean of International students in the largest school in the Southern Hemisphere!

He returned to the UK in 2016 and joined Cherwell College in 2017. 

Paul is the go-to person all things academic and is also an experienced pastoral tutor. 

Katie Sewyer

Head of Boarding

Katie has over 20 year's experience in Independent Education, focusing mainly on welfare and boarding. Following 17 years in the facilities and boarding teams at Headington School, Oxford, Katie moved to Sedbergh School where she developed their own boarding strategy. 

At Cherwell College Katie looks after our residential students and oversees welfare matters. She also runs regular drop-in sessions for students to talk about personal and academic related issues.

Katie holds a degree in Hospitality and Business from Oxford Brooks University.

Andreia Damas

Andreia Damas

SENCO

Andreia is a Portuguese Educational Psychologist with extensive experience in SEN teaching and support. Prior to joining Cherwell College she worked as an educational psychologist at international and local schools across Portugal. She also holds a Master in Psychological Intervention, Education and Human Development. We are delighted to welcome Andreia as the College's Special Educational Needs Coordinator. 

Alan Carter

Academic Coordinator & Exams Officer

Alan is an Experienced Higher Education adviser and A-level tutor in Oxford with a passion for the tutorial approach and supporting students on an individual basis. He has previously been an undergraduate tutor at Stanford University.

Alan holds a degree in History & Politics.

Pascha Francisco

Welfare Officer

Pascha has over forty years teaching experience with a particular specialism for helping students settle into British schools. 

She has experience of working as a House Matron as well as various teaching roles including ESL at top UK boarding schools. 

We are delighted to welcome Pascha to Cherwell College in a role that supports our students and helps them to thrive both academically and personally.

Katya Kryvonos

Katya Kryvonos

Finance Officer

Prior to studying Humanities at British Columbia, Canada, Katya studied Art at Hurtwood House. She has an LLB from Oxford Brookes and an LPC from City University, London. Katya is Cherwell's dedicated immigration adviser and Finance Officer.

Jane Yates

Jane Yates

Marketing & Admissions Assistant

Jane holds a BA (HONS) in Environment & Archaeology, including studies in Statistics and also credits towards a BSC with the Open University.

Jane has been working in digital marketing since 1999, designing bespoke websites, that are optimised for search engine and using google analytics. She has also worked as the principal web designer for several Oxford businesses. After completing a training delivery skills course, Jane trained staff in basic web maintenance and Photoshop using her own training scripts.

Her love of history and technology led her to building a phone app which offered a interactive trail thought the Pitt Rivers.

Becoming an Sci Fi author at age 50 led Jane to expand and develop her love of social media which contributed towards her experience in marketing.

Jane is a artist and a qualified gardener and in her spare time enjoys tending to her thriving allotment.

Philosophy and Religious Studies

A keen Philosopher, Andrea holds a degree in Philosophy and Religious Studies from Oxford Brookes and is currently researching for his PhD. 

Barry Clarke

Barry Clarke

Mathematics

With a research degree in theoretical physics, Barry has been teaching further maths for over 25 years. He writes maths and logic puzzles for The Daily Telegraph and Prospect magazine, his book Challenging Logic Puzzles Mensa (Sterling, 2003) is an amazon bestseller, and his academic treatise The Quantum Puzzle: Critique of Quantum Theory and Electrodynamics (World Scientific Publishing, 2017) sets out his new theory of the mass vortex ring. His latest book The Bacon-Shakespeare Connection: A Scholarly Study (Edward Everett Root, 2018) is based on his PhD in Shakespeare studies and argues that the plays in the First Folio (1623) have a compound of authors that Shakespeare employed while taking the credit. 

Cyrus Nayeri

Cyrus Nayeri

Geography

A well liked and highly qualified tutor here at Cherwell, Cyrus is currently studying towards his PhD on the management of volcanic hazards in Iceland. He also holds a Masters from Keble College Oxford and his undergraduate was in Geography from Jesus College Oxford. 

Denise Page

Denise Page

English Literature

With over 30 years of teaching experience, a Certificate of Education, degree in English from Oxford Brookes, and an MA in Humanities from the Open University. Denise is brilliant and well-liked tutor. Her calm and friendly nature means the she is well suited to building confidence in students during small group and one-to-one tutorials. 

Outside the classroom she enjoys writing - and occasionally publishing.

Graham Coles

Graham Coles

Art

Graham is a brilliant artist and a great teacher. He is known for his caring and compassionate nature, supporting students through the challenging subject of Art and Design. He completed his MA from the Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford. He has been teaching Art & Design for over thirty years now, having taught in different parts of the UK and for a few years in New Zealand.

Janet Simpson

Janet Simpson

English / IELTS / Psychology

Janet holds multiple degrees, including BSc and MSc in Psychology, BA and MA in English and has worked in further education teaching for over 7 years. She is also an undergraduate tutor for the Open University. 

At Cherwell College she teaches English Literature and Language, Psychology and also tutors students for IELTS of which she has in-depth understanding and has been a great support to many of our students.

John Blythe

Photography

John's background encompasses a 20 year career as a professional commercial photographer working with advertising and design agencies and high profile brands worldwide. Having complete a PgDip(Ed) in 2016, John’s focus now is as a practicing artist and specialist teacher of photography at Foundation and A level. John is currently completing a Masters in Fine Art at Oxford Brookes University.

Biology, Chemistry

Katherine holds a BSc in Biochemistry from Kings College London. She is also a trained Chiropractor and has previously worked within the NHS. Katherine is a GCSE examiner and therefore brings to the College wealth of experience and knowledge.

Laurence Hutton-Smith

Mathematics

Laurence teaches Maths AS & A Level and holds a Mathematics degree from Pembroke College, Oxford. He is also working towards his PhD from Oxford University.

Magnus Moar

Magnus Moar

Philosophy

Magnus has been a tutor for sixth form students, undergraduates and adult learners. Having completed his DPhil at Sussex University in Religion and Ethics, Magnus is an experienced tutor in Oxford.

Mark holds an MSc in Applied Statistics from Wolfson College, Oxford and tutors Mathematics and Further Maths here at Cherwell.

Matt Rattley

Chemistry

Matt holds an MChem from Somerville College Oxford. He is also working on his DPhil in Organic Chemistry from New College Oxford.

Mili Kalia

Sociology

Mili holds an MSc in Social Research Methods from St Anthony's College Oxford. She is currently working towards her PhD in Sociology.

Nigel Hezel

Nigel Hezel

Philosophy and Religious Studies

Nigel is a highly experienced tutor at Cherwell College. He holds degrees in both Religious Studies and Philosophy and has many years experience of teaching Philosophy and RS to Sixth Forms across the UK. Nigel is confident with all the major exam boards for both subjects including the older A Level specifications.

Economics

Phil has a great deal of knowledge when it comes to the Economics A Level. He holds a Bachelor of Education in Economics and Education and has taught in secondary schools for over a decade. For many years he published texts for Economics students under the Guardian Guides to the Economy series. 

Sean Murphy

Government & Politics

Sean is a passionate teacher of Politics. He is the author of Letting the Side Down: British Traitors of the Second World War and has previously worked for major television shows at the BBC.
