We hear from the new High Sheriff of Oxfordshire
26th February 2018
Cherwell enjoyed an excellent talk last week from the newly elected High Sheriff of Oxfordshire, Richard Venables. He did point out that he is not the first of that name to hold the position, as the first was born in 1365 and held the position of Sheriff of Cheshire before being beheaded in 1403.
This Richard Venables however will no doubt find far greater success. He spoke to our students about what this very old position entails, the various traditions and rituals and why it is still an important role in today’s modern society.
Richard will be sworn in in April and will hold the position for one year. He explained how he aims to raise awareness of key charities and campaigns including sports, homelessness, poverty and education within the county.
Richard spoke with humour and clarity about his role and we are grateful for him giving up his time. We also hope to see him dressed in his rather unique attire at some point in the near future…as he said, ‘embrace the lace!’
