What is the teaching at the College like?

The teaching staff at Cherwell combine academic flair with patience and creativity of approach as they help you expand your knowledge. They are united in their love of their subject and their distinctive ability to communicate this to you in an atmosphere that is academically challenging, but also friendly and fun.

Tutors who are also Heads of Department look after the weekly department meetings where students are brought together for seminar based teaching and discussion. Heads of Department also oversee the weekly trial exams.

Heads of Department also oversee practical instruction in relevant subjects in the Science Laboratory, supervise the artists in the studio, organise Theatre trips and practical performances, and plan and lead field courses for Earth Sciences.

Some tutors also act as personal supervisors. The Personal Supervisor acts as your mentor and guide, helping with overall academic progress (a first port of call for university application) and also general well-being. Students have planned meetings with personal supervisors once a month to go through academic progress reports, study arrangements and timetable, exam planning and any other issues that you may wish to raise. If a problem arises, your personal supervisor will be there for you outside of the scheduled meetings.
